Rafting can be a family day out, a different activity for a couple or a team adventure for a group of friends. The key is choosing the Genil River section that suits the participants’ ages, heights, confidence in the water and preferred level of excitement.

OcioAventura Cerro Gordo offers an introductory family section and a white-water descent. Both involve paddling together and enjoying the river, but the pace, duration and participation requirements are different.

What should you consider before choosing?

Before booking, check everyone’s age and approximate height, swimming ability, preferred level of adventure and the amount of time available. Previous rafting experience is not required, but every participant must be able to follow the guide’s instructions.

When a group includes children, teenagers and adults, choosing a comfortable shared level is usually more important than automatically selecting the most intense option.

Family rafting: the most accessible shared option

Family rafting takes place in Cuevas Bajas on a grade I-II section recommended from the age of six. It suits families with children, first-time adults and mixed groups with different confidence levels.

The descent combines navigation, coordination and games adapted to the river conditions. Time on the water is usually 1 to 1.5 hours, while the complete activity takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

White-water rafting: more pace and teamwork

The white-water section runs between El Tejar, near Benamejí, and Palenciana. It is a grade II-III trip recommended from the age of 14 or an approximate height of 1.60 metres.

It is particularly suitable for groups of friends, adventurous couples, celebrations, teams and families with older teenagers who want more noticeable rapids. The complete activity usually takes 3.5 to 4 hours.

Which experience is best for a family?

For a family with children who meet the recommended age, the family section is normally the first option. Everyone can share the same raft, learn the basic commands and enjoy an active experience without previous rafting experience.

Age is not the only factor. Height, independence, water confidence and the ability to listen to the guide throughout the trip must also be considered.

Which experience is best for a couple?

A couple can enjoy either option. The family section suits first-timers who want an accessible activity and time to enjoy the scenery. White-water rafting is more suitable when both people want a stronger challenge and meet the requirements.

An inflatable kayak or canoraft can also be a good choice for two people who want to control a smaller craft and take a more direct role in the navigation.

Which experience is best for a group of friends?

Adult groups often choose white-water rafting for its pace, rapids and shared challenge. Coordinated paddling makes it a strong team experience for celebrations and group trips.

When the group includes different ages, lower water confidence or mixed expectations, the family section may be a more comfortable way to stay together.

Large groups and mixed ability levels

For a large party, provide the number of participants, ages and approximate heights before booking. This helps the team organise the rafts and recommend the correct section.

Do not choose only according to the most adventurous member. The best experience is the one in which everybody can take part safely and enjoy the descent.

What is included and what should you bring?

The activity includes a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, paddle, river guide, internal transport, insurance, toilets and showers. Technical equipment is issued at the base before travelling to the starting point.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection, closed shoes suitable for getting wet or rigid-soled water shoes, and a complete change of clothes and footwear.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need previous experience?

No. Before entering the river, the guide explains paddling commands, raft position and the main safety rules.

Can children and adults all take part together?

The family section is normally the easiest way to keep a mixed-age group together. Contact the team before booking to confirm the specific case.

Do couples need to book a private raft?

No. Activities are organised by groups and rafts. Inflatable kayak or canoraft is another option for people who prefer a smaller craft.

What happens if someone does not meet the age or height requirement?

The team must recommend a suitable alternative. Do not book the white-water section without checking that everyone meets the requirements.

Can we add another activity on the same day?

This depends on the start time, total duration, group size and availability. A combined proposal can be requested.
